Week 1
To do list for week commencing 14th january
Tuesday : This week was an introductory week and we only had to attend one tutorial this week as we aren’t on full timetable till the following week. We had a website tutorial session with Neil in the morning in which we had a talk about coding, HTML based websites and also how to write our own coding within Dreamweaver. He also explained to us how we can use photoshop to create a website, as in Photoshop you are able to create something using just design talents and Photoshop programme will save the project as a HTML based file which you are then able to save and open in a web browser. After this I then had a meeting with Dave in which we spoke about the D&AD competition and how I would expand on my ideas that I had come up with from my 2 chosen briefs which were Oakley cycling and Batiste dry shampoo. During conversation it was felt that my Oakley ideas were stronger and this is the brief that I should pursue. I had two main ideas of pieces of clothing that could be created either socks or a snood as I had spoke to a few avid cyclists and they had spoke about how they have issues with their buff/snood on wet or cold days as the buff/snood is not made of a material that they are able to breath through and this causes their glasses to fog and steam up. I need to look into other brands such as Nike/Adidas/Umbro/Puma/Diadora/Canterbury/Samurai/Kukri. Check positioning of logo on products, see where the best place is to have the Oakley logo? Are they bold? Are they in your face? Take photos of a person wearing a plain snood & Photoshop the Oakley logo into position to get and idea of what it would look like as a finished item. SAFTEY ISSUES? WASHABILITY FACTORS? COLOUR?…. Need to look into all these points.

Week 2

Tuesday – Graphic Design Practice 3 / Professional Practice:
Wednesday – Theory: Todays morning lecture was about environmental and sustainable design in which we discussed the issues that come up when creating a piece of work as the industry is now becoming to be in a environmentally friendly mind set. We then got set a task to greenwash a previous product that is about that isn’t environmentally friendly and make it seem as if it is with the use of packaging and promotion that gives of that image. For the second part of the day we then spoke about consumerism and commodities. To do at home, Make sure tasks are complete and printed out & make sure all notes are finished and finalised if I need to refer to them for the essay module.
Due to ill health continuing and causing issues with me traveling around my projects were continued from and this is why there is no clear blog entries as I was completing work at my own set pace and there was no clear order to completing it, the work was handed in early september and all passed which I was extremely pleased with due to the situation I was in.

YEAR 3
SEMSTER 1
___________
♥
Week 1
To do list for week commencing 16th september
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Started my research module with the idea of information design with my main theme to do with traveling, although, this idea then developed when I begun looking into the two themes. This then lead me looking into pictogram and pictographs and how these have developed and the history behind them.
Wednesday – Thesis: Spoke about how hard we will need to work to complete and develop our own individual thesis’s and how this will be a important part of our marking scheme and also to show our own development and growth into third year, proving how we can develop with our essay writing and research skills. Also spoke on how each thesis will need to be of a minimum of 5000 words with the maximum being 6100 and this will be excluding referencing and quotes.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Continued researching into pictograms and pictographs which has then lead looking into hierogliphics, chinese and oriental languages and also in Olympic pictograms and how these and understood worldwide.
♥
Week 2
To do list for week commencing 23rd september
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: As the research was developing the theme of pictograms took over and I then decided that with keeping with the information design theme I wanted to create my own set of pictograms but with many of the pictograms used for travel very well know, understood and used daily I felt that it would be too difficult to change these and decided to channel the pictogram idea into a different theme. After much deliberation and decisions I decided to use fairy tales, as I felt this was a theme that everyone comes across in their lives, and I decided that it would be a good theme to use for pictograms as they are basic, clear small images that would be good for children as they are easy to recognise and understand.
Wednesday – Thesis: Although knowing this is coming soon I have been focusing most of my attention on to the GDRM4 module as I feel this is more important at the moment. Although during lesson I have been looking into the type of route I want to go down.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Once I had the theme of fairy tales I decided to create a small questionnaire to find out what peoples knowledge on them was and if so what was there top 5 favourite fairy tales? most memorable? and their top 5 favourite characters? This gave a basic starting point on what fairytales I should look into and which others needed to be more noticable. Although whilst I was establishing this information I was still building more research on pictograms and pictographs and these originated, I also look into how pictograms are used in daily life and if so where are they used and how are they used.
♥
Week 3
To do list for week commencing 30th september
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: I begun indepth research into fairy tales and begun looking into how they first came about and who was their creator, this also lead into looking how all fairy tales have a dark side and many have been created from dark beginnings. This showed that although many are pretty and have happy endings, the brothers grimm have a very different view on this. I also looked into how these could be turned into pictograms and how this will help people will understand better. This followed into me looking in the educational side and how creating the pictograms would be potentially something that will help aid children’s reading.
Wednesday – Thesis: Due to getting into my GDRM4 project I continued my research module on this day aswell, considering how far it had developed and grown.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Developing into the educational side of how these pictograms will benefit children who will not necessarily pick up a book and read, I looked into how picture based images aid this and how creating them will also become an educational factor.
♥
Week 4
To do list for week commencing 7th October
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Beginning the final weeks I decided to make sure that all the research I needed was there and made sure that I had looked into all paths that I could of, I also made sure that I had developed each part throughly!
Wednesday – Thesis: Begun to concentrate on this module by looking into the lists of title choices and also thinking about creating my own personal one.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Considering the next two weeks would be leading up to the presentation I decided to begin to make sure that my books were at a stage that would need small touching up of annotating and slight sticking in pages at stages.
♥
Week 5
To do list for week commencing 14th October
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Beginning the final week of the GDRM4 module I begun to wrap up my book work and make sure that any loose ends in it were tided up. I then made sure that all annotation was completed and that my books were at a point where I would be able to hand them in so that my main focus would be on my presentation stage and how I would form a piece for this.
Wednesday – Thesis: Look into list of titles for thesis, although decided that I wanted to keep the thesis in connection with my design project and chose to keep the theme to do with Information design.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: When beginning to plan out how I wanted my final presentation to look and decided to create a book explaining how I was going to undertake the project I have decided to do and how this would turn into a piece of design work. I wanted to book to be layed out in a very simple and clear way that would be easy to understand and not hard to work out what the main idea and plan was.
♥
Week 6
To do list for week commencing 21st October
Tuesday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Once I had the plan I begun to design my book on indesign using a blurb layout, so that I would be able to have the book made into a hardback copy to accompany my final design work when we have our end of year show. This will be my main concentration for the rest of the week to get the layout correct and to also have a chat with Dave on thursday to talk about how the font is laid out and if he felt any parts should be moved or rearranged.
Wednesday – Thesis: After deciding to keep the thesis with the same theme as the design module I chose information design and after playing around with a few titles I came up with the question, Information Design: Do Pictures Speak Louder Than Words? as I felt this is something that is in connection with the design work and is also something that is prominent in the world today, due to the development of technology and the bombardment of pictures and images in our lives in the form of newspapers and magazines.
Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: Continue to work on my presentation book ready to have checked over the following week, to change any mistakes ready to print for the final presentation.
♥

Thursday – Graphic Design Research Module 4: PRESENTATION DAY! I feel that my presentation went well and I explained the project structure and what I was aiming to achieve clearly and I feel this was executed well as no one had any questions or queries they needed to ask which I felt was more of a positive than a negative.
♥

Thursday – Meeting with Tony 3.30 for thesis talk: Spoke through this plan with Tony and he seemed pleased with the plan, and spoke about whether the multiculturalism is something which could become the main aspect of the thesis and also then be added into the overall title. He spoke about possibly starting the thesis by saying how London was stated to be the one city with the most speaking languages, then lead into isotope and how he had hoped to create a language that would be understood by everyone. He also said to look into olympic symbols and how these are a global events that many different countries attend yet still everyone understand what each event is and what each symbol means.

Week 11
To do list for week commencing 25th November
Tuesday – Thesis: Wrote my introduction for my thesis as after the meeting it got me thinking about multiculturalism and how this is a main point that I could use throughout the essay and is something that will form meaning behind my question. I decided to start the essay talking about the multiculturalism that is prominent in Britain and how this is something that has lead people to look for a universal language, as it is something that people feel will unite the world, these were such individuals as Otto Neurath.

To do list for week commencing 2nd December
Tuesday – Thesis: As I felt the last paragraph lacked some detailed information, on how people looked for and why that looked for a universal language, I researched into this heading more to gain a clearer understanding for the person who will read the thesis. Once this was done, I then added the additional information that I had collated, this then aided me to begin my conclusion, once completed I then sent this over to get read for any corrections needed. The rest of my week would then consist of correcting any errors and then sending in one more draft before printing the following week.
Wednesday – Thesis: Collected draft and edited any corrections needed.

Week 1
To do list for week commencing 13th January
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Over the holidays I had spent time analysing each fairytale and how each of them were made up and what components it is that make up each fairytale. This meant finding out all the characters, props and also scenery that was used for each tale. This then gave me a basis that I was able to work on to begin sketching out ideas for each of my pictograms. As I have begun looking into them I have noticed that many of them have well known hair-dos and items that they wear that means each character is instantly know as to whom they are. This is a concept that I could use when adapting the pictograms for the final project.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: I have begun to look at other illustrators and designers that use fairytales in their work and how these have been portrayed in different styles. This then gave me a sense of what people like and how people grasp the characters from fairytales. Although for my images personally they shall be purely based on the pictogram form and the bodies will have no major features other than hair and accessories.

Week 2
To do list for week commencing 20th January
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Continued to work out body shapes and forms of how I could begin to design and build my characters, as I want them to stay as pictogram form and basic as possible but yet have the character to fit in to each tale without looking stiff boring and bland, this is why I started to look into different ways they could stand, the way their arms are positioned, this all creates a bit of character and personality to something which could be potentially quiet boring.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Begun to work on the exhibition work and we all started to brain storm ideas that are relevant to the business design centre and also the surrounding area, whilst also involving us as a class and by the end of the day the main concepts that were chosen were the post office, CMD, periodic table and also harvesting and agriculture. These were then split across the groups we were already split into to work on, develop and to bring back next thursday to then make a decision on the chosen concept.

Week 3
To do list for week commencing 27th January
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: As I had started creating body form I started to add colour and hair and things to them which then ended up becoming the group of princess’s and with these completed this then gave me the start to begin working on the rest, all of the characters have evolved and been created through the design of another character and this is a concept I wanted that they was all interchangeable and could be taken apart and made into another part for the story quickly and this is something that worked very well. I also needed to begin working on using these characters within environmental scenery and whether this worked or they got lost, and if so could changing opacity help this situation.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Once all back together, each concept and the chosen concept was the post office, again we were then set upon the task of coming up with a name and logo that revolved around this concept and how this would also work with us as a class. Also to look into things we could do and use and design for our exhibition that then involved the post office.

Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Deciding the name and starter logo for the exhibition, the chose name was first class designers with a logo to match although many people in the class were unsure whether this made us sound too full of ourselves and there us a possibility it will change to 1st class 2014.

Week 7
To do list for week commencing 24th February
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: I spent the day looking into flow charts and researching different versions of how they can be formed and created as this will be the general layout to form the stories that will explain what happens in each fairy tale. In the afternoon we spent time to choose a identity for the exhibition space, we each got given 3 post it notes each colour meaning a number to point score and choose the best logos designed and also the general concept for the idea. They descended 3,2,1.. this then gave everyone a chance to have a fair decision when choosing a finalised logo.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Spent the morning making sure that my book was annotated and up to date ready for an afternoon meeting with Tony to talk over my concept so far and how it is shaping to become a piece of design work. Points to now work upon, that come up from this meeting are;
1. Work towards the development of your definitive treatment.
2. Consider the potential attention of environmental elements and how these may support/interact with the characters.
3. Fully clarify the contact of different narratives and if they are to remain in the traditional setting/ or become more contemporary.
4. Consider how a book might be structured and subdivided. i.e coloured sections and page dividers between sections. Might be an introductory key.
ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY ALL THIS BY NEXT THURSDAY!!!
After this meeting we then had a group meeting to talk about the identity we are going to choose for the overall exhibition at new designers, we decided upon the post office with the theme of first class designers, as this was the general agreement in the room. We then begun to brain storm ideas that develop from the word post office and how we can use these for ideas for the exhibition. As the business design centre was turned into a post office after the one down the road got bombed in the 1940’s this then brought into context such ideas as wartime posts and the idea of rationing, how this can all be incorporated into the exhibition.

Week 8

Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: I was absent from class due to a hospital appointment but was filled in by people were in on what went on during the lesson and kept me up to date with the details of the meetings for the group exhibition work.
Wednesday – GDRM5 Print Company Meeting: Today we are going to the print company to have a look at idea and designs for the brochures and catalogues that will be handed out on the exhibitions. This will then give us a rough idea of how much we will need to spend all together and how this will be broken down per person.
POINTS FROM MEETING:
*Perfect Binding
– Done in multiples of 4/2 page inserts
– Professional Looking
– Clean & Neat
– Would look nice with a textured cover
*Square Format
– More cost effective
– Get more pages when printing as apposed to A4/A5
– Sits well in your hands / Not too big to carry
*Paper Choices
– Coated Silk/Gloss – Better for making images more prominent and punchier
– Uncoated – Images look flatter and softer
*Spot UV
– Silk paper is need for this process for the ink to sit on does not work with uncoated paper will soak through
– Will cost more/ Not cost effective
*Foil
– Affordable process for out front cover of our catalogues, as it isn’t overly expensive
– Lots of colour choices to pick from
– Can be done onto uncoated paper, again more cost effective
– Will work out cheaper yet still has a professional and classy look to it
*Bolt Binding
– Needs to be done manually
– Gives you the chance to add and remove pages / i.e sticker pages and tear out pages can be added to this
– Gives you the chance to personalise them and be able to add to pages for special gifts for people
– This option of binding gives options for choice and change
*Debossing
– Embossing the front cover without a foil
– Could mean the foil added on top could get damaged and scratched off as the image is raised as its pushed from underneath
*Perforated lines
– Not cost effective
– Would be easier to do the whole book instead of individual pages and would not work for what we want
*Book Bind
– Can be printed onto or foiled
– Gives an extra added part to the catalogues
*Pocket in book
– This is a possible option and would make it easier for people to collect business cards ect and place them in the back
*GFSmith
– Paper company
– Textured papers for the front cover of the catalogue /look into these
*Schedule
– Make sure there is a schedule laid out of when all the decisions will be made and how we will get the design parts created
– This then takes away pressure and rushing
*MAKE A DECISION BY MAY!!!*
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: The points from this print team meeting were then taken back and shared with the rest of the group on the thursday lesson, everybody took in the information and felt that there was lots of choices that we could decided upon in terms of what everybody wanted individually and also as a group. This also then allowed us to begin the design of the logo for the 1st class designers exhibition for new designers in which the catalogues would be used at.

Week 9
To do list for week commencing 10th March
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Begun the first flow chart poster after working out a design concept on how to have them laid out onto the page, although it took a while as I was going along as I kept having to move, change and rearrange parts to fit within the next part of the story so I need to be patient when working with the rest, snow white is now complete just 15 more to complete.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Finalising designs for the logo for our new designers exhibition and getting a final name so that the web team which I am part of could begin to get up and running on the web with a website and also social media sites. I am in charge of the twitter account, which has been made and I have been making sure that I have been updating it every few days in the lead up to our exhibition.
♥
Week 10
To do list for week commencing 17th March
Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Continuing with the flow chart posters now that I have got the idea going they are starting to flow more easily when I am creating them on illustrator and are not taking as long as I had expected, I’ve also realised that I didn’t take all scenery into account and have been having to make extra parts as I have been going along to help fit with parts of each fairy tale.
Thursday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Now that the name has been decided and final logo chosen it is time to start designing the front cover of the catalogue, and also choosing colours for the overall catalogue and also logo, as these will be the colours that will then run throughout the entire exhibition within our post office theme. The colour choices atm are black/red, cream/red, grey/red, or black/red & spot and then this alternative then with the other colours aswell, so this is another decision that needs to be taken to the group.

Tuesday – GDPM4/GDRM5: Begun to design a poster purely to state who each character is and so people can be introduced to each one before they have a chance to look at the book.
